The Flight from Orlando to New York

The 950-mile journey from Orlando in Florida to New York City takes just over two-and-a-half hours by jet, although you will only spend around two hours in the air.

The exact route your plane takes will depend on the weather conditions and the airport you are flying to, but your aircraft will head north over the eastern seaboard of the US, passing the coast of Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey along the route.

You’ll be flying at an altitude of around 32,000 feet and the plane will reach speeds of 500mph.

If you want views of the countryside pick a seat on the left of the plane, and if you want to look out to sea grab a seat on the right. The window seat on the left will have the letter A, and the seat on the far right is often lettered F.

Although the flight is domestic it still pays to arrive at Orlando International in good time and check in an hour before you are due to depart. And always check whether items of luggage are included in the ticket price as some airlines charge extra for suitcases and backpacks.

US citizens will not need to show a passport to board the plane, but you will still need a form of government photo ID. Non-US citizens will need to bring their travel documents.

Getting to Orlando International is simple. The airport is located six miles from downtown Orlando and there are buses, shuttles and cabs. There is ample long stay parking if you are driving.

The airport is one of the biggest in the US, with more than 44 million passengers a year. The routes to New York are among the busiest, with more than a million people flying from Orlando to Newark and 750,000 flying to JFK each year.

As you would expect at such a major airport there is plenty to do at Orlando International while you wait for your flight. There are dozens of bars and restaurants, and shops selling everything from surf gear to cigars. If you want to relax there is even a spa or you can unwind in one of the airport lounges.

On arrival in New York the major airports all have excellent transport links to the city center and you can also hire a car.
