Chrysalis Vineyards: Middleburg, VA

Jenni McCloud is the owner of Chrysalis Vineyards in Middleburg. The vineyard is known for growing the Norton grape, which originated in Virginia and is used to make dry red wines. While visiting, take the opportunity to enjoy a seasonal wine tasting, which includes 10 different red and white wines, and is led by an on-site associate who is an expert at Chrysalis wines.

Aileron Estates: Napa Valley, CA

Shannon O’Shaughnessy is the proprietor of Aileron Estates, where visitors can take part in a new year-round experience called Take Flight where they climb aboard a vintage Boeing PT-17, which were the same types of planes used for flight training during World War II. The planes have been modified to fit two passengers in the front cockpit. During your flight you’ll be able to see the entire estate and vineyard, along with a few in-air loops and barrel rolls. Afterward,  try out Aileron’s first new vintages of cabernet sauvignon and sauvignon blanc. All bookings for the flight and tasting should be made by calling or emailing the estate.

Breathless Wines: Healdsburg, CA

If you love champagne then you’re going to want to try out Breathless Wines. This sister-owned winery has a staff composed of almost all women, and is known for their still and sparkling wines, all of which are made with time-honored French traditions. Before grabbing a glass, you might consider their Sabrage Experience, which is where you’ll learn the art of sabering a corked bottle of sparkling wine. Wide River Winery: Clinton, IA

Good wine in Iowa? Yes, indeed. Wide River Winery is owned by Dorothy O’Brien, who started growing grapes and making wine for her family in 1997. The winery owns three tasting rooms across the state, in Clinton, LeClaire, and Davenport, which makes tasting the wines easily accessible no matter where you’re driving through. Throughout the year Wide River Winery hosts a number of food and wine events, especially around major holidays like Mother’s Day.

Prairie Berry Winery: Hill City, SD

This spot in Hill City is another unexpected gem. Sandi Vojta is a fifth generation vinter who owns and operates Prairie Berry Winery. The legacy of the winery started with Vojta’s great-great-grandmother, Anna Pesä, who immigrated to the Dakotas in 1876 from Czechia. Pesä used the local fruits to make wine for her family, and since then their wines have offered the best in hand-picked local ingredients. The winery is set in the middle of the Black Hills, making for a picturesque backdrop to enjoy a glass.

Three Sisters Vineyards: Dahlonega, GA

Sharon Paul owns Three Sisters Vineyards, which sits on 180 acres in the historic area of Lumpkin County, Georgia. The winery is just a few miles away from the first major gold rush location in the United States. Three Sisters Vineyard is known for their seated tastings at their indoor tasting bar. This “locals only”-type vineyard offers live music and local food trucks every Saturday, so you can get a taste of local wine and cuisine without ever moving your car or fighting for a parking spot.

Pedernales Cellars: Stonewall, TX

Located in the heart of Texas Hill Country, Pedernales Cellars is owned by Julie Kuhlken and her brother David. The family-owned winery started when their parents planted an estate vineyard 25 years ago, and now the winery is thriving with Spanish and Rhone-style wines. Pedernales Cellars is committed to sustainable wine practices and has the largest underground barrel cellar in the entire state. The winery offers a barrel tour and tasting that includes a tour of the wine production facility, and tastings straight from the barrel before the wine is bottled. The winery also holds an annual grape stomp in August, where guests can get their stomping boots on and crush grapes the old-fashioned way.

Iron Horse Vineyards: Sebastopol, CA

Joy Sterling grew up around some of the greatest wines in the world in Paris. After moving back to the United States, she joined the Iron Horse team in 1985, the same year the winery had their wines selected for Ronald Reagan’s toast to peace at a summit in Geneva. Since then, the winery has become a destination for both history and wine lovers. Enjoy a wine tasting with Mount St. Helena in the background while sipping and sampling sparkling wines, chardonnays, and pinot noirs. Airlie Winery: Monmouth, OR

Since 1997 Airlie Winery has been owned by Mary Olsen, and since 2005 Elizabeth Clark has been its winemaker. Airlie is one of about 30 wineries in the Pacific Northwest to be certified and employ the highest level of sustainable practices. Guests are encouraged to bring their kids and dogs, pack and picnic, and enjoy the outdoors while sipping on a glass of red or white wine. Kids will enjoy exploring the open fields while parents relax with glass in hand, of course.

Nassau Valley Vineyards: Lewes, DE

Another unexpected wine destination is Nassau Valley Vineyards in Lewes, about 20 minutes from Rehoboth Beach. This award-winning winery is owned by entrepreneur Peg Raley, who hosts a number of events throughout the year, including a Sunday farmers market with a sangria bar. One event that always draws in visitors is Sippin with Sloths, where guests enjoy a glass of wine while having one-on-one time with a sloth and get that perfect sloth selfie in partnership with Barn Hill Preserve. Have extra time? Tour the onsite museum, which explores the history of wine and shows off art from local artists.
